Van Diemen’s Land | Rapha

A great cycling video from Rapha, makers of cycling sportswear.

Van Diemen’s Land is the name first given to Tasmanian, a large island off Australia’s south coast.

The video gives some insight into the rugged Tasmanian landscape, one of the true wilderness areas of the world, especially the west coast, which to my mind, still has the  look and feel of Gondwanaland – the single continent which is supposed to have existed millions of years ago, before it  split up to become the many continents we have today.

Some interesting  facts about Tasmania:

  • English convicts were sent to this place in the 19th century. It was extremely isolated and even if they escaped their convict quarters there was little chance of surviving in the strange wild areas of the island.
  • White Europeans drove the native Tasmanain Aboriginals to extinction
  • The Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine), like the Tasmanian Devil was an animal unique to Tasmania.
It is now extinct. The last known Thylacine died in Hobart Zoo on 7th September, 1936.
